AACHENER WANDMALER

Klaus Paier (1945–2009) was a German graffiti and street art pioneer known as the "Aachener Wandmaler" (Aachen Wall Painter). Born in Essen, he trained as a locksmith before earning a physics degree at RWTH Aachen. From 1978, Paier painted around 100 murals in Aachen, often illegally, using brushes and dispersion paints rather than spray cans. His bold, expressive works addressed social and political issues like nuclear power risks, apartheid, war, and social injustice, reflecting his studies and activism. Paier often collaborated with Josef Stöhr, another Aachen artist.

The graffiti, named 'Hochsicherheits Trakt' (maximum security unit), refers to prison conditions in German jails of the 70s. Following the suicides of RAF prisoners in autumn 1977, this issue was important for the left-wing scene for several years.

Dr. Peter Kreuzer had documented the graffito in Munich's Lehel district on Liebigstrasse.
