KATMANDO
King Katmando is a key figure in Munich's graffiti scene who started early, sneaking into the city after school and wandering the streets of Munich looking for friends and like-minded people. He began tagging and painting at the train station, already certain that he would become an artist, a writer or, as it turned out, Katmando.
Since the mid-1980s, best known for his eight-letter tag "KATMANDO", inspired by New York's graffiti culture of bold, colourful lettering, he was among the sprayers who painted Munich's S-Bahn trains and at the Dachauer flea market's "Hall of Fame", leaving a vivid mark on the city's fast-growing street art landscape.
In the 90s, Katmando founded Juice Magazine, one of the most important and highest-circulation music magazines in the German-speaking countries. In addition to his art and his regular contributions to the Munich graffiti scene, Katmando is currently working as a successful trained chef.

Dr. Peter Kreuzer, a German professor of ethnology, became well known for his commitment to Munich's graffiti scene in the 1980s and 1990s. When the scene began in the early '80s, Kreuzer studied and documented this new form of youth culture with his camera as part of the two-year pilot project "Everyday Life in Munich." While working for the Munich city archives, he carefully took notes while photographing the graffiti.
In 1986, Kreuzer published his research in Das Graffiti Lexikon and founded the Euro-Graffiti Union (EGU) together with the lecturer and lawyer Dr. Konrad Kittl (the so-called ‘sprayer lawyer’). The EGU gave talented writers the opportunity to paint murals legally and sometimes even for a fee.
