MAIN CONCEPT

Formed in 1990 in Munich, Main Concept is a pivotal German hip-hop group known for its innovative contributions to the genre, particularly in establishing German-language rap. With the support of Astrid Weindl's Färberei, the group played a significant role in shaping Munich's hip-hop scene through their music and jams, especially the Livin' Large events where graffiti artists sprayed live.
Founders:
David P. (MC): The frontman and rapper, David P. transitioned from English to German rhymes, inspired by early influences like Michael Kuchar and mentors like Rio Lobo. His freestyle prowess, showcased in Plan 58, earned him a strong reputation. Choosing a career as a doctor over mainstream rap, he prioritized authenticity over commercialism, contributing to the group’s unique identity.
Glammerlicious (Producer): Known as Glam, he began producing beats in 1987 with school friends, leveraging early computer-based sampling techniques. His meeting with David P. in 1990 sparked the formation of Main Concept, and his production skills were crucial to their sound, starting with their first performance and tracks like those on Coole Scheiße (1994).
DJ Explizit (DJ): Joining after meeting Glam at hip-hop parties in the late 1980s, Explizit completed the trio in 1990. His DJing added depth to their live performances and recordings. He contributed to the group’s name, inspired by American hip-hop groups Main Source and Original Concept, and remained integral to their consistent lineup over 25 years.
