RAY

RAY, also known as Ray X was a popular figure, recognized as one of the pioneering artists who helped establish Munich’s graffiti scene in 1983.
He was particularly noted for his humorous or satirical dog and became quickly known for placing his characters in unexpected difficult to reach or prominent locations throughout Munich, increasing their visibility and impact while keeping his real identity a mystery to this day.

In 'Ein Dicker Hund' (Fat Dog), created in spring 1983, Ray left one of his first pieces of graffiti above the entrance to his school (MPG, Max Planck Gymnasium). With "That's Graf Fity" and a dog peeing on the school's name, Ray caught first-time attention. The graffito was quickly removed, but this did not stop him from spraying a second one on the same spot. This time, the dog was dressed as Zorro, with an eye mask, hanging down a rope and spraying the name 'Ray'.

In Der Disco Hund, the dog imitates John Travolta's famous dance scene from Saturday Night Fever. Ray carefully copied the scene, even including the colourful light tiles of the dance floor.

Ray sprayed from 1983 to 1985, but continued painting, just under a different name while studying classical painting.

'The Naut' from 1985 was his last official piece, sprayed on a 30-metre-high bridge in the south of Munich. It is presumed that he was helped by his brother, who would sometimes assist him.
